A cellist in the St. Louis Symphony, Alvin McCall is currently principal cellist of The Metropolitan Orchestra of Saint Louis. Before coming to St. Louis he was principal cello with such ensembles as the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra – a conductorless ensemble of 40 musicians, where everyone takes on the responsibility of leadership. He was also principal cello with the Prism Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Virtuosi and has served as Assistant Principal Cello with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra (of which he is still a member), the New York Chamber Symphony, St. Luke’s Chamber Orchestra and the Caramoor Festival Orchestra. Besides these appointments, he was also a member of the New Jersey Symphony and the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra.

As a soloist, he has appeared with The Webster Symphony, University City Symphony, Virginia Philharmonic, Moscow Academic Symphony Orchestra, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and The Saint Louis Symphony.

McCall first conducted a larger orchestra when Louis Langree invited him to lead a portion of a Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra rehearsal. He had conducted a smaller ensemble in Mozart’s Third Horn Concerto as a student at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has learned much about conducting from working with conductors of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, The St. Louis Symphony and Maestro Allen Larson.

Mr. McCall makes his St Louis conducting debut with this concert.
