Frederick DeVaney

IN MEMORIAM 1956-2016

 

 

MOSL double bassist, Frederick DeVaney, has served as principal double bassist of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra for the past 29 seasons. A student of the late Henry Loew, longtime principal double bassist of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Mr. DeVaney is a busy freelance musician in the St. Louis area. He is the bassist for the American Kantorei in St. Louis and is a member of the orchestra of the Municipal Theatre Association of St. Louis. He occasionally performs with the Kingsbury Ensemble, the Heartland Festival Orchestra, and the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, and was previously the principal bassist of the St. Louis Chamber Orchestra, and the Ballet Orchestra of St. Louis. Mr. DeVaney performs chamber music with "Cellibasso," a quartet of one double bass and three area freelance cellists.

Previously, Mr. DeVaney has performed with the New Orleans Philharmonic, and served for five seasons as principal double bassist with the Peoria Opera. He has been a frequent substitute with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and has performed hundreds of concerts with this ensemble, in St. Louis and on tour. Mr. DeVaney has been the instructor of double bass at SIUE since 1992.
